untitled (unchained)

laser cut porcelain

Untitled (Unchained) is a laser-cut porcelain disc designed to resemble a vinyl record. The grooves were cut directly into raw clay using a laser cutter, but the intensity of the beam caused the porcelain to vitrify along its path—distorting the surface and rendering the record unplayable. The song encoded, Unchained Melody, nods to the iconic pottery scene in Ghost, but here the romance collapses under technical pressure.

The work plays with the idea of clay as a material that gathers memory—fingerprints, pressure, atmosphere, even seismic history. Like ancient pottery found near volcanic sites that inadvertently recorded the force of an eruption, this porcelain record captures a different kind of violence: the collision between digital precision and physical transformation. It’s not a song, but a fossil of one—etched, warped, and burned into being.
